George William Sharp Family Tree

Welcome to the George William Sharp and Alvena (Maxey) Sharp Family History Page.

I will be sharing via this blog the family history of George and Alvena Sharp, their descendents and their ancestors.  My Dad was Harold Sharp, oldest son of Loyd Sharp.

George and Alvena Sharp had 11 children, all their names beginning with the letter "L".  Loren, Luster, Loyd, Letha, Lewis, Leda, Lexie, Lucy, Lillie, Lizzie and L.D.


I welcome any additional information on each child and will update the information and republish with any corrections or additions. I will post some of the pictures I have and will add any that are sent to me.

George William and Alvena (Maxey) Sharp

George William Sharp was born on April 23, 1862, in Livingston County, Missouri, to John D. and Martha Elizabeth Rosson Sharp. He had 2 brothers and 2 sisters. He married Annie Catherine Young on March 5, 1882 in Livingston County, MO and they had one son, John William Sharp. George and Annie were divorced on July 18, 1887. George married Alvena Elizabeth Maxey October 8, 1893 east of Jamesport in Grundy County, MO at the home of and by the Rev. Jesse Harris. They were attended by Polly Whorton Gibbs and William Snyder. Alvena was born February 27, 1874 in Hickory, Grundy County, MO and was the daughter of William T. and Eliza Jane Mason Maxey. She has 10 siblings. Alvena's family were part of the earliest settlers to Poosey, Livingston County, MO, with her grandfather, Nathanial Maxey being one of the earliest settlers from Garrard County, Kentucky. George and Alvena had 11 children together, all born in the Livingston/Grundy County areas, and all whose names started with the letter "L". George rented and worked as a farmer his whole life. George and Alvena lived their entire married life in Grundy County except for a short time that they resided in Livingston County, Missouri. George died May 1, 1948 and Alvena died May 3, 1956. They are buried together in Maple Grove Cemetery in Trenton, Grundy County, Missouri.

1900 - Jackson, Livingston, MO - George is listed with wife Alvena and 4 children. Years married 7, Can read and write, Rent home.
1910 - Jefferson, Grundy, MO - George listed with wife Alvena and 9 children. Rent. Farmer. Years married 16, Can read and write, Native tongue English.
1920 - Jackson, Grundy, MO - George is listed with wife Alvena and 8 children. Rent. Farmer, Can read and write.
1930 - Chillicothe, Livingston, MO - George is listed with wife Alvena and 2 children. Rent. Farmer. Can read and write. Able to speak English. Age at 1st marriage 31.
1940 - Trenton, Grundy, MO - George is listed with wife Alvena and daughter Lizzie. Lives at 157 South Main, Trenton, MO. Renting and lived in same place in 1935. Highest grade completed 7th. Renting home.  Had pension plus other income source.
1950 - Trenton, Grundy, MO - Alvena is living with her daughter Lizzie at 514 Monroe in Trenton.

2 Newspaper articles regarding the death of Alvena Sharp


1st Article – May 3, 1956

Mrs. George Sharp Services Set To be 1:30 pm Sunday at First Baptist Church; Body at Davis-Blackmore

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist Church in Trenton for Mrs. Alvenia Sharp who died early Thursday afternoon at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Luster Sharp, on Trenton, Route 5.  The body will remain at the Davis-Blackmore Funeral Home until shortly before time of the church rites.

Mrs. Sharp who was 82 years old last February, was the widow of George Sharp, who died May 1, 1948.  She was born in Grundy county, February 27, 1874, a daughter of William T. and Jane Mason Maxey.  She was married October 8, 1893 to George Sharp.  They lived in Grundy county most of their married life.

They were the parents of eleven children, ten of who survive.  Survivors include 5 sons, Loren Sharp, Trenton; Luster Sharp, Trenton Route 5; Louis Sharp, Dearborn, Michigan; Lex Sharp, Chillicothe; L.D. Sharp, Garden City, Michigan; and five daughters, Mrs. Letha Chumbley, Trenton; Mrs. Leda Harness, Ottumwa, IA; Mrs. Lillie Nothnagle, Wayne, Michigan; Mrs. Lucy Smith, Wayne, Michigan; Miss Lizzie Sharp, Los Angeles, CA.

She is also survived by 45 grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. K.B. Conrad and Mrs. Charles Dockery, Trenton, two brothers, Alvin Maxey, Trenton; and Frank Maxey, Chillicothe.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7:30 to 9 o’clock Saturday evening for visitation.


2nd Article – May 6, 1956 

Mrs. George Sharp Rites Conducted

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 pm Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Trenton for Mrs. Alvenia Maxey Sharp, widow of George Sharp, who died early Thursday afternoon at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Luster Sharp.

Rev. Homer Harris, assisted by Rev. C. Wayne Rosecrans, officiated.  Special music was furnished by Nevin Adams, who sang “Gathering Flowers For The Master’s Bouquet” and “Beyond the Sunset”.  Miss Joetha Goodin played the accompaniment.

Burial was in the family lot at the Maple Grove Cemetery.  The services were under the direction of the Davis-Blackmore Funeral Home.

George Sharp, 86-year-old resident of Trenton, died in his home, 514 Monroe Street, at 6 o'clock this morning after an illness of four weeks.  His condition had seemed much improved the past week.  He had lived in Trenton most of his life and had engaged in farming until he retired 12 years ago and moved to Trenton.  He was a member of the Shelburn Baptist church.  Mr. Sharp was born April 23, 1862 in Livingston County, a son of John & Martha Rosson Sharp.  His wife is the former Alvena Maxey.  They were parents of 11 children, 10 of whom survive and all of whom were here April 23 for their father's birthday anniversary.  His survivors include his wife; the children Loren and Lester Sharp & Mrs. Lester Chumbley of Trenton, Lewis & LD Sharp of Dearborn, Mich, Mrs. Roy Harness of Ottumwa, IA, Lexie of Meadville, Mrs. Elmer Smith & Mrs. John Nothnagle of Wayne, Mich and Lizzie Sharp of the home, 42 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren and a brother J.D. Sharp who lives in Iowa.  Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm Monday at the First Baptist church.  The body will be taken to the family home early Sunday morning.

  1. I have enjoyed this so much! Jerry Sharp (Lex) was not as close to the family as others evidently. I (Jerry's wife, Carolyn Henderson Sharp) knew hardly any of this family until AFTER 1985.
